A simple Spooky Halloween Mushroom activity for little hands to get involved with. It is really easy to create these spooky mushrooms using just a skewer and mushrooms.

Larger mushrooms are slightly easier for children to work with if available. You could ask children to bring them in from home. They can also be roasted and eaten as a tasty snack.

How to make a spooky Halloween mushroom

You will need:

  • Mushrooms
  • Wooden skewers (with the sharp end removed if you feel it is too dangerous). The sharp end does enable you to create more detail.

Instructions:

Spooky halloween mushrooms
  1. Puncture the mushroom near the top to create a couple of eyes. Why not have more than two eyes?
  2. Add two deep lines for a nose or holes, or no nose at all.
  3. scrape a mouth and possibly cross-hatch it with vertical lines to indicate teeth.
  4. Add any other decoration - perhaps basil stalks as hair?
  5. You can either leave them like this or bake them in the oven at 180 degrees for 15mins - keep your eye on them. This will make them dry out a little.
  6. You could use them as little mushroom heads impaled on the skewers, and/or have them as snacks.
