It’s been one week since many of our team at Cosy got involved in the fantastic SkegVegas 100, and we’re still absolutely buzzing. The 100 mile bike ride from Derby to Skegness is in its 11th year of raising funds for the fantastic children’s holiday charities, and it’s been a real privilege to be involved. Read on to find out more about this brilliant initiative, and how our Cosy team have taken part.

What is the SkegVegas 100?

SkegVegas 100 is a charity bike ride, running annually since 2013 to raise funds for Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre (DCHC) and Derby Kids Camp (DKC). SkegVegas was first set up by Terry Willis and his family, who are lifelong supporters of DCHC. Terry and his brothers started out as holiday guests in the 1960s. Experiencing the fantastic work DCHC as children, Terry and his family decided to support their valuable work once they grew up. Terry also worked for Derby Homes for many years, and used his skills, along with his apprentices, to assist DCHC in general upkeep, saving them thousands of pounds over the years. What a story!

In 2023 Terry stepped down from organising SkegVegas for a well earned rest. Pete and the team here at Cosy stepped up to take over fundraising and keep the event alive, and brought with them the wonderful Derby Kids Camp as an additional beneficiary. We’re incredibly honoured to take up the mantel!

How do Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre and Derby Kids Camp benefit?

Each year, Skegvegas riders set off for an exciting 100 miles journey to support Derbyshire Children’s Holiday Centre, and now, Derby Kids Camp too. Both charities provide holidays for children across Derbyshire who deserve a memorable break - whether that be due to economical circumstances, being young carers, or a myriad of other reasons.

DCHC send 14 children every week from March to December (400 children annually) for a joyful seaside holiday. With rising costs at every stage of the process and each holiday costing around £450 per child, every penny raised is incredibly beneficial for this fantastic cause.

Derby Kids Camp take over 300 children per year on action packed camping trips filled with activities and trips out. As a fully volunteer run program without government funding, DKC rely on the generosity of local business, grant giving trusts, and incredible initiatives like SkegVegas 100.
