At the heart of Cosy Direct has always been nature, natural materials, and sustainability. We’ve been ahead of the curve with evoking and celebrating nature in all we do, so we’re thrilled to see a growth in the popularity of biophilic design in recent years.

In this blog post, we share the key concepts of biophilic design, and how we’re embracing it in our classroom and setting design services.

What is biophilic design, and why is beneficial in education settings?

Biophilic design is a holistic approach to interior spaces that integrates natural elements, patterns, and processes. This method is especially relevant for room design services, as it transforms environments into calming, productive, and sustainable spaces.

Biophilic design complements educational settings beautifully. Exposure to nature is proven to improve wellbeing and connection with the world around us. While outdoor play remains fundamental to early learning, bringing these benefits indoors to the aesthetic environment provide further opportunities for children to enjoy the benefits. Natural shapes, calming tones and sounds all support creativity, and foster a calm, centred space as opposed to bright, clashing colours that fight for attention! Gone are the days of excessive plastic and bright colours - now is the time for calm and neutral spaces that allow learners to express their creativity and freedom.

Biophilic design is also very inclusive to learners of all needs, ages, and abilities. Neurodivergent children, particularly, may well be more prone to overstimulation in a classroom space - anything we can do to reduce excessive visual noise is key.

Next, we’ll illustrate how we’re embracing each core principle of biophilic design in our design services as a specialist in natural, teacher-inspired furniture and resources for early years and educational settings.

Natural Light

Maximising natural light is foundational in biophilic design. Large windows, skylights, and light-reflecting surfaces help daylight penetrate deep into a room, supporting circadian rhythms and reducing reliance on artificial lighting. Cosy Direct offers furniture ranges that are designed to work harmoniously with natural light, such as low-profile storage units and open shelving that avoid blocking windows, ensuring spaces feel bright and inviting.

Natural Materials and Textures

Incorporating organic materials like wood, rattan, jute, and stone brings warmth and authenticity to interiors. Our furniture collections feature solid wood tables, woven baskets, and natural fiber rugs - materials chosen for their tactile qualities and sustainability. These elements not only look appealing but also provide sensory richness, making spaces feel grounded and connected to the outdoors.

Water Features and Natural Sounds

The presence of water, whether visual or auditory, has a calming effect and enhances the multisensory experience of a space. Our furniture layouts can accommodate tabletop fountains or sound systems playing nature sounds, integrating these elements seamlessly into the overall design.

Indoor Plants and Living Elements

Plants purify air, add vibrancy, and create a dynamic connection to nature. Our product ranges include planters and storage solutions that make it easy to integrate greenery into any room. For example, their wooden plant stands and tiered trolleys can display a variety of indoor plants, enhancing the biophilic effect.

Earthy, Nature-Inspired Colour Palettes

Colour schemes drawn from nature - soft greens, warm browns, terracotta, and blues, promote calm and focus. Cosy Direct’s furniture and accessories are available in these natural hues, producing calming, warming environments. Our wooden furniture, for instance, is often finished in light, natural stains that highlight the grain and warmth of the material.

Nature-Inspired Forms and Patterns

Biophilic design uses shapes and patterns that mimic those found in nature, such as curves, fractals, and organic textures. Cosy Direct’s product lines include rounded tables, nature mimicking designs, curved seating, and storage units with natural wood grain, all of which echo the irregular, comforting forms of the natural world.

Prospect and Refuge

Creating a balance between open, inspiring areas (prospect) and cosy, sheltered nooks (refuge) helps occupants feel both secure and connected. Our modular furniture systems allow for flexible room layouts, such as open learning zones with low dividers for prospect paired with snug reading corners furnished with soft seating and rugs for refuge.

Multisensory Engagement

True biophilic spaces engage sight, touch, sound, and even smell. Cosy Direct’s tactile resources—such as wooden blocks, textured mats, and fabric-covered seating, invite interaction, while our storage solutions can house aromatic plants or essential oil diffusers to enrich the sensory environment.

Sustainability

Biophilic design is inherently sustainable, prioritising materials and practices that minimize environmental impact. We’re passionate about providing eco-friendly products, including FSC-certified wood, recycled materials, and durable designs meant to last, aligning with the broader goals of biophilic and sustainable interior design.
